Some stories begin with a puppy.

What is this

A life being understood.

This is where I write things down. Loving Daisy pulled a great deal to the surface — the years we’ve spent growing up together, the quiet lessons and the loud ones — and I’ve found I need to think out loud to understand any of it.

These essays are that thinking. They wander through love and what it asks of us, through worth and how we forget it, through healing and the strange, unhurried way it arrives. They aren’t finished thoughts. They’re honest ones.

Daisy didn’t know she was teaching me. That might be the most important thing about her.
